More than thirty years ago, while stationed in the Philippines, I had the chance to design my own wedding dress. My sketch was terrible, truly something my two year old could have drawn, but a gifted tailor named Maryland saw past the lines on the page and understood exactly what I imagined. Over the weeks that followed, she treated me as if I were her most important client. She never cared that I did not have much money or that she had other work waiting. She treated me with the same kindness, patience, and respect every single time I walked through her door. In her hands, I was not just a young Marine with a dream. I was important. I was beautiful. I was a princess.

That feeling stayed with me for decades. I felt it again when I walked down the aisle in the dress she created, when I put on my Dress Blues for the Marine Corps Ball, and when I slipped into a gown for my oldest daughter’s wedding. Each time, I felt confident, cherished, and seen, not because of the fabric itself, but because of the way Maryland made me feel during the process. That experience shaped me and became the heart of my mission, to give every customer who enters my boutique that same sense of beauty, worth, and magic.
